In January, Ben Keita, 18, was found hanging from a tree near his home in Lake Stevens, Washington after going missing on November 26. Although the manner of his death was originally classified a suicide, the medical examiner recently changed the classification to undetermined, reported KIRO 7.
When Keita’s death was first reported as a suicide, his father heavily contested the idea.
“No history of depression, anxiety, any psychological breakdown at all, so he was a very... happy young man," said his father, Ibrahima Keita.
Because there were no other injuries to his body, the Snohomish County medical examiner concluded he took his own life. However, after pressure from his family, Keita’s death was re-evaluated.
According to the medical examiner, a K-9 search occurred weeks earlier and they failed to find his body. Additionally, the rope he was hanged with was tied 50-feet high in the tree, an usual height for a suicide.
As a result, the Washington Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations asked the FBI to open an investigation into Keita’s death.
“We just want to make sure that the expertise, the experience and the human resources of the FBI are brought to make sure everything is comprehensively investigated, no stone is left unturned,” Washington CAIR Executive Director Arsalan Bukhari said.
In a statement, the Seattle office of the FBI said it “is communicating with our police partners. We are aware of circumstances of the individual’s death and will review them with consideration of federal law. If warranted, we may conduct further investigation. A review does not necessarily result in the opening of an investigation.”
